Background

Klaas, the developer of this app, worked for a greater part of his career as an instructor for a large medical X-ray company. During these years, he came across multiple occasions where the service representatives he trained did not have the proper tools for equipment adjustment and image quality measurement. This led to the development of software tools that utilized Excel macros and C++. These tools ended up being used extensively and worldwide.

How does this align with school bus driving?

After retiring and taking on a job as a school bus driver in 2019, he noticed a glaring deficiency in the way substitute bus driving was handled. Just as X-ray service representatives, substitute drivers did not have the proper tools to do the job.

This led to a search for a way to make substitute bus driving safer and less stressful. There are expensive applications on the market that also solve some problems, but they place a significant burden on branch offices and transportation departments. The goal was to develop an inexpensive tool that required no administration overhead and worked within the school bus industry as it functions in North America.

Finding a solution

After seven years of driving school bus, Klaas had sufficient experience to define what a good solution would look like: serving as subject matter expert, shaping the user interface, and carrying out quality assurance testing in the field.

Recent developments in AI made it possible to build a functional app of over 10,000 lines of code, extensively tested through hundreds of builds and real-world test drives. The app is now available for both Android and iPhone.

To make BusRoute accessible for bus companies of any size, the price is kept at a straightforward level. The transport company purchases an access key that covers all drivers. Renewal is yearly, and roughly the cost of a cup of coffee per driver.
